We regret to inform you that Stasik died on June 13, 2024. The Foundation expresses its sympathy to the boy's family and friends.
The Foundation helped with the payment of $13,960 for 2 packages (20 vials) of Defibrotide. During the two-day collection period, over $2,000 was collected. The funds continue to flow. Donations intended for Stanislav Makaruk will be redirected towards the treatment of other children.
At the age of 2, Stasik was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The baby's bone marrow does not produce platelets, which are blood cells that are responsible for the process of coagulation. On March 21, 2024, Stasik had an allogeneic bone marrow transplant that was not related to him. But on March 28, the baby was exposed to hyper engraftment syndrome, which caused the child's body to destroy its blood cells. The doctors were successful in stopping it, but an acute graft-versus-host reaction (GVHD) of the fourth degree emerged, affecting the skin, liver, and gastrointestinal tract. Stasik was given immunosuppressants, which, unfortunately, decrease the child's immune system. So, in May 2024, the boy was admitted to the intensive care unit with septic shock. Stasik's blood culture showed negative bacteria. The baby is currently in intensive care. For the treatment of venoocclusive liver disease, a child needs 50 vials (200 mg per vial) of the medicine Defibrotide.
