Meet the child
Sophia has cerebral palsy (CP). The term cerebral palsy includes a whole complex of various disorders of the nervous and muscular systems that occur in children.
Since birth, the girl has been undergoing regular treatment and rehabilitation, thanks to which she has achieved significant success. However, unfortunately, spasticity (tension) of the lower extremities does not allow Sophia to walk independently.
Sofia had selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) in 2022, a procedure that was made possible by our benefactors to relieve spasticity (muscle stiffness) in cerebral palsy. Surgical intervention allowed for the expansion of movement range, improvement of balance, avoidance of complications, and increased endurance. The girl can sit on her own, move around with the support, and eat on her own. The ability to walk without assistance emerged in 2024. Sofia can walk short distances without assistance and move around with a walker without any restrictions.
In order to select the appropriate rehabilitation tactics and treatment methods, the child must exclude the presence of genetic diseases. Sofia is required to conduct a genetic study that includes complete sequencing of the CeGat exom.
